BASIC SKILLS CLASS - BACK AGAIN!!
***Please read the section below about REGISTRATION***
WHY YOU SHOULD TAKE THIS CLASS.
We've been a pretty fun group so far, with a lot of short trips and socializing. There have been really great events, as well as a few where some of the folks involved should have been better prepared for the conditions and distances involved. In the future we will be adding longer trips in more open-water conditions, as well as some overnight and multi-day trips.
The prerequisite to moving forward with this is, of course, training!
We are lucky enough to have a BCU-certified trainer who is passionate about kayaking, is a great teacher, and is willing to arrange group training sessions for us!
COURSE OVERVIEW:
This Basic Skills course is intended to make our current "Beginner SK2" trips more of a pleasure and less work for you, to teach basic paddle strokes, to review basic rescue techniques, and to overall make you a better and safer kayaker. There will be no certification offered at this level, but the knowledge and techniques taught will cover quite a bit of the BCU 1-Star and some of BCU 2-Star certification. This course will be approximately four hours with instruction both on land and in the water.
REGISTRATION:
If you plan to take this course you MUST REGISTER WITH KAYAK JEFF. Payment and registration should be made directly to KayakJeff either over the phone ([masked]) or in person at the store. RSVPs are used ONLY as a convenient way to know who's registered and to give participants a way to comment after the class.
COSTS:
$55 if you rent a boat to learn in - Includes kayak, paddle and PFD. If you currently paddle a SOT, let me suggest this option - you'll learn more!
$35 if you bring your own boat - If you have a sit on top kayak it must be in good condition with no frayed lines and proper fitting hatches. If you have a sit inside boat it must have positive buoyancy with either bulkheads or secured float bags at either end. No frayed lines etc. In either case all boats are subject to inspection and acceptance by the teacher.
This is a special price for Meetup Group Members only!
Class size is limited to 6 students.
WHAT TO BRING:
Every one must wear a proper fitting PFD. You should also consider sunscreen, hat, clothing suitable for a swim (preferably no cotton), you must have foot wear that will stay on in the water.
LOCATION:
Meet at 8:00AM (please be prompt or early) at the KayakJeff shop, 354 E. Dania Beach Boulevard. Training will take place at West Lake Park, a short drive away.
FUTURE TRAINING:
This course will be taught every month as demand requires. Those who are interested in going further with kayaking will have the opportunity to schedule BCU 2-Star and 3-Star training in small groups. Most of the longer trips we will undertake will require that you be at least a 2-Star, with the intent of making sure that everyone on the trip has the minimum level of competence and knowledge required to keep themselves from getting into trouble and the skills required to give aid if required.
