Dear Float Your Boat Members,

We have scheduled a Kayak and Camping event in conjunction with the NW Burbs Camping Meetup for June 12th until June 15th at Wyasuling State Park. This is a beautiful State Park of which the Wisconsin River merges with the Mississippi River. It is an ideal place for not only camping, but for kayaking, as there are many waterways, small tributaries, and streams that combine along the shores of Wyasuling! The State Park combines many other activities including miles of hiking trails, bluffs, challenging bike paths, and professional star-gazing telescopes at night. For more information on the park please visit:

http://www.wyalusing....

There is also a kayak rental shop that rents boats and gear outside of the entrance to the state park. Since they have a limited number of canoes and kayaks, please make prior arrangements if planning on renting a canoe or kayak by contacting 608-994-2860 or e-mail us at hklotz@tds.net or visit http://www.captainsco... They are located on US HWY 18 and State HWY 35 at County Road C which is 5 miles South of Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin (it is also the turn off for Wyalusing State Park).

Since it is not expected for everyone to attend all 4 days, we have reserved 1 group site for Thursday, and then 2 sites for Friday through Sunday. I have reserved a group campsite for Friday through Sunday, and Beth -the organizer from NW Burbs- has reserved an adjacent group site for Thursday to Sunday. The total amount of campers for Thursday is limited to 20 and then 40 from Friday through Sunday. This may change if the demand becomes greater. Many members share dual membership in both groups. We will combine our members with theirs to make this a joint event. If our site becomes full or vice-versa, then we will share members.

Costs expected for the trip include: If we are full - $40 x 3 nights + $10 reservation fee / 20 campers = $6.50 a person for the entire 3 nights, slightly higher if 4 nights. This is the base cost for camping only. The only addition costs are food and firewood. Other activities are optional. For food we usually break the total number of people into groups and have them communicate with each other individually to come up with a meal. As members sign-up, we will assign particular meals and schedules as the information becomes available. There is also the city of Prairie du Chien, which is a fairly large town which food and supplies can be bought locally. More information will be coordinated closer to the event!

When RSVP'ing, please indicated which days you can attend! I am not including the MAYBE option.

I have reserved 20 openings for Float Your Boat members only for Thursday-Sunday. After May 30th, if these spaces are not taken by our members, I will then release those spots to awaiting members of the NW Burbs meetup!

Any questions, please feel free to contact me!

-Tom

The meetup was fun but had its "rough spots." I won't go into any details, except to say that I agree with the other person's comment that we probably shouldn't combine the two groups again.

I really appreciated all the guidance from the Kayak pros who made this first timer's experience a positive one. Appreciate all the effort from Tom and Beth to organize the event and the group meals.

I am glad I was freak'n able to pull this off. I enjoyed meeting everyone, and thank everyone for helping out. Next time, we will keep it smaller. Both Beth and I agree that was too many people. -KAYAK-IT!-

Anyone still looking to carpool? Stephen and Bob both bailed on me at the last minute. All I ask is to split the gas and parking. Travel in style... all-wheel drive Subaru wagon with lots of room! Pls email me at jondfry@gmail.com Thanks!

Just an update: Victor and I are pulled off on the side of the road, Hwy 151 and Exit 69, waiting for Anita to meet us. She's about 10 miles away. :) Will make sure Anita's tent doesn't get blown away! LOL Will also play "dodge the lighting" as Victor said. Oh' it is raining VERY VERY HARD here, most of the cars, from time to time, are pulled off to the side because of the rain. DRIVE CAREFULLY TOMORROW.. SEE YOU FRIDAY.

I had put Fri-Sun but actually changed plans for Th-Sun. I'm already with a day off and packed ready to go so I'm going to go for it anyway! See you all Friday then if I don't blow away!

All, just in case you were not checking your email, Thursday only has been cancelled due to forecast storms and hail (Beth cancelled the 1st day). Forecast is sunny and nice for Fri-Sun. So come up on Friday instead, as Tom mentioned in the emails. As Steve mentioned below, rentals will not be available on the Wisconsin River. However, we'll be sharing our own boats on the protected lagoon areas since there is no current there and therefore no danger from the high water levels on the rivers.

Hi All, I just spoke with Harry from Captain's Cove. He informed me that there are no boating allowed this weekend there fore my kayak rental was nullified. Just an FYI!

Who attended?

    •  I really had a great time in spite of a handful of mean people - as Victor said, "MEAN PEOPLE SUCKS!". I'm glad I decided to stay with the original plan and leave on Thursday. We were able to spend the beautiful Friday just hanging out and enjoying the warm and sunny weather as oppose to driving. :) I'd like to say, "thank you," to a few folks: Victor, Rachel and Mader = For letting me use a kayak and putting up with me for the whole weekend. Anita = For coming up with us on Thursday and being a cool cat Tom and Debbie= For organizing the whole thing and chilling out with us Linda = For lending me her kayak, and being super nice neighbor, and chilling out with us for the weekend. Luigi and Dawn = for sharing their food with us, and chilling out Beth = for organizing and for the camp food Charlie (shush) = for a few beers, chilling out and picking up a case of beer. Jon F = for helping out on a few stuff

Once people settled in - who belongs where, who gets along with who, I think we all found the groove. This shouldn't be tried with such a large group of mixed personalities over such a short time. A camping trip is NOT the place to meet so many new people. This should have been organized into subgroups, responsible for their own things. Individuals known to get along and "play well with others." (late nighters with other late nighters, early morning people with others of same) - if all of that is too much to organize, keep the groups/meetups WAY smaller. I had GREAT fun with the people I arrived with and the others I EVENTUALLY gravitated toward, but that took HALF the trip (ugh!) Mean people suck.
    •  I enjoyed the kayak group but would not combine the two groups again. There were just too many people, clicks, and expectations. It was also too hard to organize food, group activities, and kayaking. (The kayaking may have been better if others were allowed to rent, but weren't due to the weather.) Nothing again the camp group, but I would not attend another event which was combined with any two meetup groups. People join one group over another because they like the activity level of that group and combining the two did not click. I would however kayak and camp again, but only with a smaller group.
    •  What a great group of people! Everyone was very welcoming and willing to share their camping/kayaking knowledge with the beginners of the group. Cannot wait for the next event.

The flood conditions on the Mississippi and Wisconsin rivers made for great kayaking through the trees on the islands.
    •  Great fun on this trip, which was my first! The kayaking was really fun. I enjoyed everyone's company. Wished I could have spent more time with more people.
